-Due to an unexpected schedule change from the front office, we are having our quarterly Data Day today. This means we are not having the Parts of Speech Quiz today but will instead have it tomorrow (or Wednesday for Period 5). I will also collect the homework tomorrow.

We then brainstormed ideas of issues that are happening in the community and world that need help. Next week we will narrow our focus and research a particular cause that is important to the student. -Today we turned in Vocabulary #8 homework and took the quiz. Retakes or makeups for the quiz will be on Thursday during Academic Focus time. There is no new vocabulary homework this week.

-Our Hero Essay/Common Assessment 2 is due TOMORROW for periods 1,2, and 6. It is due Wednesday for Period 5. Click on the literacy home button above if you need copies of all the handouts. You will turn in your final copy and rubric. I will also collect your plan sheet and rough draft.

-We will begin watching the movie Invictus in class starting tomorrow. Any student not finished with their essay will be sent out to work on that. They may join us when their essay is complete. Any student not bringing their permission slip by tomorrow will be doing an alternate assignment instead of watching the movie. See Friday's post if you need to copy the permission slip.

-The annual "Sip and Shop" will be taking place tomorrow in the Erwin Library/Media Center. Kids can bring $1 to purchase hot chocolate and snacks. The 10 Thousand Villages display will also be available if kids wish to purchase items. Purchasing items and snack is optional. There will be games for everyone.

-Students had class time to work on their neat, final copy of the Common Assessment2/Hero Essay. There will be some more class time to work on this on Monday. The final essay is due on Tuesday, December 18 for Periods 1,2, and 6 and on Wed., Dec. 19 for Period 5.

-Today we checked our Plan sheets and worked on our Rough Drafts. The rough drafts are due the next class period. We will then revise and edit in class and work on our neat final copies here at school. The only current homework for this assignment is to have the rough draft finished by tomorrow for period 2 and Thursday for Periods 1, 5, and 6.

-Today we visited the Library and learned about the Reading Counts program.

-We also continued working on our Plan Sheet for the Hero Essay. We finished our body paragraphs and worked on our Introductions and Conclusions. Also kids received a permission slip for the movie Invictus. It is the story of Nelson Mandela and the South African rugby team. We will use this film to conclude our unit on heroes. -Today we did an Daily Language Review focusing on staying on topic. We went over and corrected this in class.

-We also went over the topic for our Common Assessment 2/Hero Essay. Students choose three qualities of heroism that they want to focus on and searched for heroes in our research as examples. This is not homework. We are just beginning the process of making decisions about which information we will use in our upcoming essays.
