From the Principal….
We have three principals that are writing for this newsletter. Kellen Marks and Gwynn Marks were principal for the day (purchased this opportunity from the Berthoud Bash).
From the desk of Gwynn Marks…
I think the teachers at this school are very nice. My teacher Mrs. Roth gives us snacks if we forget them. She has shelves just in case you forget. She teaches us lots of things. My favorite thing to learn in her class is math. I like math because we get to add and subtract and do math games. I like science too. I also like that my brother is in the same school that I am in. I like my big brother.
From the desk of Kellen Marks…
I think it is great that the PTO is doing nice things to show how important the teachers are. I appreciate the teachers because they have taught me most things I know. They have taught me how to write in cursive, multiply, divide, and fractions. Mrs. Starr has taught me how to care for Anole’s. I have had a great time learning about Anoles. Even I don’t get an anole to take home, I hope I can get one later. I also appreciate that all of the teacher have taught me different things. Mrs. Fossey has taught me how to find books in the right places. Mrs. Adamson has taught me how to type faster with an app called Type to Learn 3. I want to thank all of the teachers for what they have done.
From the desk of Mr. Bowles…
I wanted to celebrate with all of you some of the great things we are seeing at Ivy. After completing our testing last week, we are seeing some really strong growth. We are very impressed with how many more students are able to come off of ILP’s and how many students are reading at or above grade level. Thanks to everyone that supports our students in reading (parents, volunteers, teachers, staff, etc). Thanks to the students for all of their hard work.
Our third grade TCAP scores will be released today. We have much to celebrate. Our overall scale score is our second highest. We made a huge jump in the number of advanced readers (15%). We have averaged 8% ad-vanced over the past 5 years, so this is a 7% jump. Our overall number of proficient and advanced is 78% (this is 1 % greater than our 5 year average, but down from last year’s 84%). We had several students that were within 1-2 points of being proficient.
A HUGE thank you to the parents, PTO, staff and students for a successful Stallion Stampede. This was a record breaking fundraiser for our school. I want to thank all of our PTO and parent volunteers for the countless hours they put into this. With the weather creating obstacles, the school worked together to make this a tremendous
success. We have wrapped up our first year of our 3 year implementation of STEM. We are so proud of the progress we have made in this transition. The students are excited about what they are learning. The teachers are pushing student thinking to deeper levels. We are very excited about the future of Ivy Stockwell.
Thanks to everyone in the Ivy Stockwell community for making this an amazing place to be.

Greetings from the Library
The school year has flown by and I can’t believe it’s almost over. We’ve read some great books, and we’ve learned a lot. I’m reading Soar Elinor to third and fifth grade students this week. It is a beautiful, inspiring book about Elinor Smith, a famous woman aviator. She accomplished amazing things even as a teenager, due to her plucky spirit.
The last day to check out library books from the Ivy Stockwell Library will be May 10. All library books will be due back by May 17. Any class that returns their library book on time (and pays for lost books) will get a popsicle party! The first class to return all their books will get popsicles and cookies.
I would encourage students to visit our local libraries this summer and expand their ho-rizons. Berthoud Public Library is hosting a “Dig into Reading” summer program for kids in grades 1-5, and a “Family Garden” program for kids in kindergarten and below. One way to foster reading is to take advantage of e-books through the new Thompson School District Over-drive system (or Loveland Public Library e-book system). Stay tuned for a handout coming home this month on accessing e-books.
One of the wonderful things about being a librarian, is the opportunity to work with all the students in the school. As you know, we have very special kids. It has been so fun getting to know them and fostering their love of reading.
Enjoy reading this summer!
