School & History |
Sarah Milner Elementary School opened in 1978 in south western Loveland. Our school is named after Sarah Milner Smith, who was one of Loveland's first teachers. She was born in Canada in 1844. The Milner family moved to Burlington (Longmont), Colorado in 1864, and Sarah Milner taught in the first public school in Larimer County in 1866 for 4 years. She married Edward Smith in 1870 and moved to the Arkansas Valley to start a ranch. Hardships came, and she returned to the new town of Loveland in 1878. Shortly after she become a widow, and she established a boarding house to support herself, and her 3 young children. In 1885 Sarah taught school for 3 terms in Loveland's first brick schoolhouse. the old Washington School. She later homesteaded in the Buckhorn Valley and taught in Masonville, Colorado. She died in Loveland in 1939 at her ranch. |
